Review: YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking Mascara

My quest for the perfect mascara is well documented on here and I've tried most of them available on the High Street as well as quite a few from the Selfridges Beauty Hall. It is nigh on impossible to find a mascara that lifts, volumizes, separates and lengthens all in one go without clumping or flaking after a few hours. Is it really so hard to ask for a mascara that does all of the above?! I think not.
YSL mascaras are renown for smelling really nice smell (I've got a thing about smelling my makeup and everything in general) as well as the power to fulfill most of the requirements I listed previously. The only downside to YSL mascaras is the fact that they begin drying up after 2 months and result in a very clumpy mess inside the tube.

I was sent the YSL Shocking mascara last year and I used it religiously for about 3 months before it started going funky so this review is majorly slightly overdue.

Housed in the signature gold tube like all YSL mascaras, the Shocking mascara is no different.

The brush:
I quite like the brushes on YSL mascaras and this one didn't disappoint either. There were loads of bristles which were evenly spaced so they gave my lashes a good coating and no clumping.

Before mascara:

I hate my eyelashes for being so damn poker straight!!!

After mascara:

VA VA VOOM LASHES, BABY!!!

YSL Shocking mascara worked wonders on my lashes and really gave them the lift and volume that they needed which is actually amazing. Some mascaras tend to fall flat after the initial 'wow' effect but not this one, no Sir-ee. My lashes didn't look or feel clumpy and they didn't drop either which is always a bonus. You know what I mean by 'drop' right? You apply mascara and your lashes look really fluttery but by the end of the day they've lost their volume and just look blah. It's honestly the worst thing ever, especially if you've forked out a lot for a new mascara and it just doesn't perform.

I would definitely recommend this mascara if you're looking for something new that ticks all of the right boxes and judging by the photos, it definitely does!

YSL Shocking Mascara is priced at £23.00 and available online from the YSL Beauty shop or department stores nationwide.

What do you think? What kind of things do you look for in a mascara?

Until next time...

7 stiletto lovers had something to say::

  1. I have to agree, I love this mascara. I bought it around christmas time when Debenhams had a wee cheeky 20% off everything! My only slight criticism is that it sometimes crumbles and I have little black dots on my face/in my eye...but perhaps someone could recommend a primer that might stop that? Other than that though I agree that it lasts well and doesn't "drop". Well done YSL.

  2. Wow, looks absolutely amazing! Personally, I've only ever tried YSL eyeliner, but I keep seeing great reviews of other YSL products lately. Makes me want to go and buy it all! Usually I just use a drugstore mascara, but these pictures look stunning!

  3. I love this mascara, it totally does what it's meant to (even on my tiny lashes!)
