Review: NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara

I've been on the hunt for a new mascara for a few weeks now and have been asking for recommendations from anyone and everyone because there are so many products out there and I only have one set of eyes to try them out on. I've tried so many different mascaras and was really loving my Paula's Choice Illicit Lash Maximum Impact Mascara but it's coming to an end so I need something new to flutter my lashes.
The NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara (I hate these long winded names!) came in the Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself kit that I received after the launch event so I figured that it was the perfect time to try it out to see if it was any good.

If you're a fan of big chunky monkey brushes then you'll probably like the look of the NARS one but I'm total opposite and tend to steer clear of anything like this. I've tried loads of mascara and different brushes but I've found the best ones for me are the rubber/plastic ones but these also depend on the overall shape of the brush. Too thin and there is just no point but too fat and they're useless. I'm just too hard to please but I was still willing to give the NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara a whirl.

The formula of the mascara was quite light compared to what I was expecting and it took a couple of coats to make sure that each lash was defined and coated. I usually prefer my mascara to go on somewhat thicker than the NARS one because I feel like I've got more oomph but if you're looking for something a little more subtle, then this is a good one to have.

The mascara did give my lashes a significant lift and this photo was taken towards the end of the day, hence why my concealer is all creasy and my liner is drifting down my eyes. As I mentioned earlier, I had to go over my lashes atleast twice because just giving them the once over made me feel like I didn't have anything on them at all. Also, I have really stubborn lashes that have no natural curl whatsoever so I tend to look for more in a mascara than just volume. Although my lashes were seperated and given a slight pump in the right direction, I probably wouldn't have purchased this mascara if it wasn't already part of the set as it wasn't my style brush from the get go.
For those of you lucky enough to have naturally volumised lashes and want a mascara that will give them some definittion, then I would recommend this mascara. The product doesn't flake off at all and has decent staying power so a lot of people will probably like this for those reasons. However, if like me, you want something that gives you volume, definition and an overall fluttery look, I wouldn't recommend it. Having to apply 2-3 coats of a mascara is just way too much for my liking and I know there are other mascaras out there that do the job with just one swipe.

Have any of you tried this mascara before? If you have, did you love it or did you find it a bit of a letdown like I did?

Until next time...

  1. Your lashes look great! I'm not a fan of big brushes and definitely prefer mascaras that only need one coat to look good so will be giving this one a miss...it's drugstore mascaras all the way for me! x

  2. Thanks for commenting, Lily. I think that there are some really good mascaras readily available on this high street that ones like this NARS one aren't even worth parting with money for. xx

  3. I really like this mascara. It looks lovely on you and if you take a moment and keep building it up I think you'll be amazed at how movie-star esque your lashes will become.
Everything you said about it staying on, not flaking, no clumps is just the beginning. It's incredibly waterproof and hence the need for that amazingly gentle eye makeup remover that doesn't require rinsing off :-) I love this remover too for touch ups and just a soothing experience for my eyes beyond just removing the makeup so easily. I love that NARS has been including it in eye makeup kits!
For me I like having the control of a mascara that can be built up over many coats. Depending on how much eyelash fringe I want I coat for natural but better or keep coating and coating ;-) to make a very dramatic but clean look - beautiful! The NARS Larger Than Life LENGTHENING brush is a plastic mold and may be more your style (it's amazing too ...).
The last thing I want to mention is that your eyelashes get some great nourishment from the macadamia nut oil in the NARS formula - which if you are going to wear mascara, then it should help your lashes look better rather than cheaper formulas which risk drying out and eyelash breakage.

  4. Hi Joan,
Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you've found that the mascara really works for you. I've been trying to get this mascara to work for me but I just don't think it is my style mainly because of the brush. I'll definitely pick up the lengthening version and try that because the formula is pretty good.
Also, I'm not a fan of the eye makeup remover at all :( It made my eyes sting really badly which isn't good as I'm a contact lens wearer so anything that irritates my eyes in the slightest gets a big thumbs down from me.

I guess it's just different strokes for different folks!
