Swatcheroonies: MAC 'Gana' & 'Sur'

Hi all.

When I saw the Mickey Contractor blush swatches on Temptalia, I knew that the 'Gana' powder blush was definitely going to be mine. It looked like the perfect highlight shade on top of another blush or even on it's own so there was no doubt in my mind about purchasing it. The other blush in the collection, Sur, didn't have the same effect on me when I first saw it. I'm a sucker for peach/coral/pink/hot pink blushes but Sur was just a really flat dusty rose (if that!) kind of blush that doesn't even catch my eye let alone make it's way into my online basket!

So, imagine my surprise when I open my MAC deliver to find that I've been sent the Sur powder blush from the Mickey Contractor collection and not Gana. Just to make sure I hadn't made a mistake, I triple checked my confirmation email and found that it was actually a MAC mistake. Anyway, it all got resolved after a quick phone call to their Customer Services and I was sent the correct blush the following day and told I could keep the wrong one.

Take a look at both blushers:

(L-R) Gana and Sur

A closer look at Gana:

I tried to photograph the really fine shimmers in the blush but it was a complete fail. The photo does it no justice whatsoever but there are teeny tiny gold flecks in the blush which make it gorgeous.

As it is a frost finish, the blush works perfect as a highlight or even on it's own if you were using it on a 'no-makeup-but-makeup' kind of day.

How pretty does that look? It's not at all *meh* or *blah* as some people have made out it to be on their blogs. It's not a white blush so there is none of that awkward reflecting light business that you can get. I definitely think that this blush would suit olive and darker skintones better than pale skintones however, layered on top of the right pink-ish blush might let it suit everyone.

A closer look at Sur:

Do you see what I mean about it being a really flat colour? I like a matte blush just as much as the next gal but there's something about this shade that actually does make me think *meh*.

The swatch photographed slightly different as to how it really looked to the eye and I feel like it looks too powdery in this photo. With that in mind, before I swiped it on my hand and blended it out, I did have a fleeting feeling that this would just look a bit too dark and chalky on the skin.

I might have been wrong with this one because it gives a little bit of colour and doesn't look chalky after being blended out. There is a nice hint of colour that can gives a natural flushed look instead of an exaggerated one which could be pretty but I'm not completely sold. Maybe I'm just too attached to my pink and coral shades of blush to step out of my comfort zone but I am willing to give Sur a try and see if it'll swing my vote.

What do you lot think? Should I give the Sur powder blush, which is a satin finish, a chance or should I stick to my guns and not stray from my trusty pinks?

Until next time...

  7. you really got lucky with these blushes. I couldn't even get hold on one of those. I think Sur would be good for darker skin tones. I am NC44, I would have bought it
